    M11 USS Constitution in New York Harbour

The USS Constitution, a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate, is perhaps the most famous ship in the history of the United States Navy. Launched in 1797 and named by President George Washington, she is the world's oldest commissioned naval vessel afloat. 

Constitution is most famous for her actions during the War of 1812 against Great Britain, when she captured numerous merchant ships and defeated five British warships: HMS Guerriere, Java, Pictou, Cyane and Levant, which earned her the nickname “Old Ironsides.” Because of these successes and the public adoration she earned, the Navy has kept Constitution afloat far beyond her expected expiration date. 

The enduring and formidable USS Constitution is the focal point of the scene, and the elements of the composition are balanced round it. While time has passed her by, she still dwarfs the modern, steam-powered vessels that surround her. She enjoys her well-earned retirement as the country she protected in its infancy grows into a modern, industrial nation around her.  She is the world's oldest commissioned vessel and I wanted to pay homage to her through this painting.
